This internship is a part of the Synapse Again project between Insomnia festival in Tromsø and MeetFactory in Prague, which is supported financially by Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway through EEA Grants.
Synapse Again is the outcome of several years of cooperation between Insomnia Festival in Tromsø, Norway and the international arts centre MeetFactory in Prague, Czech Republic. and builds upon previous projects of artist exchange (both export and import) and educational activities, especially the Synapse 2015 project.
The name “Synapse” - written and pronounced the same in Czech and Norwegian - represents the connection and information transfer between both cultures and organisations.
In four distinct work modules spread across two years, both organisations will collaborate on multiple key activities:
- An artistic residency and collaboration between a Norwegian and Czech artist, resulting in two commissioned interdisciplinary art-in-public-space installations, commenting on current social issues, including minorities status by exploring inner city peripheries and their socially excluded inhabitants. -Norwegian-Czech team co-curating a gender-balanced and inclusive music and audiovisual programme to be presented at Insomnia Festival and at two showcase events at MeetFactory in both 2022 and 2023;
- A peer-learning programme aimed at further professionalization and expanding the capacity of independent cultural operators from local art communities in both Czech Republic and Norway, particularly Insomnia and MeetFactory;
- A cultural-manager-in-residence programme for young Norwegians and Czechs interested in gaining hands-on experience and knowledge abroad, working on the above activities, mentored by experienced professionals.
During Insomnia 2022 we will present «Black Embrace», an artistic residency and collaboration between the Czech artist EPOS 257 and the sami artist Joar Nango.
Our co-curation at Insomnia 2022 presents the 4 artist:
Insalar
Their shamanistic techno folk hybrid, rooted firmly in Anatolian Alewi religious poetry, and their energetic, almost punkish attitude created a mystic following around the bands improvised early shows. The release of the hypnotic stomper “Kime Ne” on UK’s Honest Jon’s label in 2015, catapulted the band on to the international stage, where their idiosyncratic mixture of traditional Anatolian/Mesopotamian instrumentation, electronic music and spiritual/philosophical lyrics continue to captivate festival audiences.
Juba
Characterised by her thrilling blends and effervescent energy, Juba has steadily built a reputation as a confident, skilful and daring DJ, who champions African and African diasporic sounds across Europe and beyond. Her electrifying sets reinforce that not only is she a captivating DJ, but a skilled craftswoman whose unique energy brings any party to boiling point.
PLANNINGTOROCK
Planningtorock – aka Jam Rostron – is a Bolton-born Berlin-based singer- song writer, composer, producer and director with three critically acclaimed studio albums of left-field dance to their name – not to mention various collaborations, Opera's, film scores and remixes. A selftaught, non-binary, genderqueer musician, they’ve spent a decade plus queering sound and vision as Planningtorock.
Ursula Sereghy
With a background in playing jazz and formative years of playing saxophone in a live band, Prague-based Ursula Sereghy stepped out of the hustle to focus, all while becoming a regular at the local Synth Library Prague. An extensive period of voluntary detachment from everyday life during the pandemic gave rise to the stunningly confident debut album 'OK Box' fabricated by this dark horse of a producer.
The project is funded by Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway EEA Grants
