Masterclass: Film Music

Insomnia, TIFF and Musikkontoret Nord are pleased to invite you to a masterclass in film music for silent films with the experimental group Cleaning Women.

The master class will give an inside view of the Cleaning Women self-made instruments, their 20+ years’ experience of making film music and composing music for silent films, their music-writing methods and their experiences in performing.

Cleaning Women has composed and performed music for over 15 short and feature-length silent films. They have been performing them all around the globe, the latest trip being to the Telluride Film Festival’s 50th anniversary in Colorado, USA. Before that Cleaning Women has been seen accompanying films in various places, such as Laboratorio Arte Alameda in Mexico City, Estonia Art Museum KUMU in Tallinn or Il Cinema Ritrovato Festival in Bologna, Italy and of course at the Midnight Sun Film Festival in Sodankylä, Finland.

Cleaning Women has also composed music for contemporary films, the latest one being Alice Rohrwacher’s 40-minute short Le Pupille, which was nominated for an Oscar in 2023 in the Live Action Short Film category.

Cleaning Women is an experimental group consisting of three cleaning robots (CW01, CW03 and CW04). The origin of their acoustic sound can be traced to self-made and self-customized instruments crafted from mangled household items. But what makes them special is the way they sound. Even though the starting point is avant-gardish and experimental, the result is a jaw-dropping combination of skilled musicianship, original soundscapes and easily accessible, even danceable music – a combination of cinematic sci-fi western and sparkling trash can disco.

The workshop will be held at Tvibit on Friday the 19th of January 2023 from 10 am to 11:15 pm.
The masterclass is open to all musicians who are curious about film music no matter what genre. Please confirm your attendance by filling out this form.

This workshop is presented as part of Insomnias talent program Cloud: EXIT and is supported by Talent Norge and Sparebank1 Nord Norge.
