Mattin is an artist, musician and theorist from Bilbao, based in Tromsø and Berlin. Working with noise, improvisation, performance and theory, he explores how collective situations can expose, and potentially rupture, the forms of alienation that structure everyday life.

Recently, his work has turned to smartphones, feedback and networked communication, hijacking technologies of everyday connectivity to produce unstable collective situations. Writing about Mattin’s performance this year at the You and Me Festival in Beijing, Drew Daniel described the work in The Wire as an “immanent experience of noise as communism”: a self-organising acoustic ecosystem in which nobody entirely controls the situation, yet everybody becomes responsible for it.

Rather than representing communism as an image of a future society, Mattin’s work asks whether it can appear immanently, however briefly, within the contradictions of the present: no audience, no star, no sovereign author, just a situation that belongs to everybody and nobody.
