October 17th 11:30-13:00 – Rådstua Teaterhus
Vestregata 48, 9008 Tromsø

How can movement become sound – and sound become movement?

In this workshop, sound artist Lars Andreas Nilssen and choreographer and dance artist Chollada Phinitduang open up parts of the working method behind To Be a Body, Is to Be Tied to a Certain World.

Participants will have the opportunity to connect to parts of the sound and sensor system and explore how movement data can be used to control, shape and manipulate sound in real time. We will look at how bodily movement can be captured through sensors, how the data can be mapped to different sound parameters – and how sound, in turn, can influence the body and the way we move.

This workshop is for anyone who enjoys geeking out on technology, sound, the body and systems. It is particularly relevant for sound artists, musicians, dance and movement artists, and others curious about the relationship between electronic sound and physical movement.

We will work with Ableton Live, motion sensors, mapping, listening and improvisation. Lars will share insights into how the system is built, as well as some of the technical and artistic choices behind it.

The workshop is intended as a kind of starter kit for this way of working. We are still exploring the relationship between body, technology and sound ourselves, and invite participants into that process.

The aim is for participants to leave with a set of practical tools, ideas and approaches that they can take further into their own work.
